Impact on leisure

In the 1980s personal computers were small, relatively cheap and became very popular for home use. Although some users started creating their own programs, especially games, what started as a small cottage industry making personal computers soon turned into a huge commercial industry with hundreds of PC manufacturers and software publishers jumping on the PC bandwagon. Many of these did not last very long.

The steepest growth of home computers, in terms of sales, was from the early 1990s onwards. The sales of personal computers are now in decline. The powerful mobile technology of smartphones and tablets outsold PCs for the first time in 2012.
